The image of the imprisoned bird is often use as an allegory for the voice trapped in the castrato singer. Here the word-painting adds a special, flute-like quality to the music. A wide range for the full alto voice. Irene is causing trouble again!

The source is Santini HS 861 from the collection in the Diözesanbibliotek Münster, where it appears in a volume containing cantatas by Alessandro Scarlatti, Francesco Mancini, Carlo Cesarini, Giuseppe Tosi, Marc Antonio Ziani, Carlo Benati, Bernardo Sabadini, on anonymous composer in addition to 2 cantatas by Pistocchi, the current Tortorella imprigionata and Non più pene al cor mi sento for soprano and continuo.

With an opening reminiscent of the famous Stabat Mater for soprano and alto solo with strings, this is a beautiful setting of the Marian antiphon text. Divided into 5 contrasting sections, with one section further divided into two.
