Why, oh why, is Clori so hard on her erstwhile lovers? Once again she is up to her old tricks and our singer is more and more upset…

The source is a manuscript in the collection of the Biblioteca del Conservatorio di musica S. Pietro a Majella – Napoli; Segnatura: Cantate 20. The cantata is also ascribed elsewhere to Astorga, however current opinion [Jackman & Seller] points towards Riccio as the composer.

Eurilla, Love, pleasure, the seasons, what could go wrong? A delightful cantata for soprano and continuo with si sona sections for the accompaniment, a very high range for the singer and real challenge for both.

The source is Santini HS 859 from the collection in the Diözesanbibliotek Münster, where it appears as the penultimate work in a volume of cantatas by Barone Emmanuele D’Astorga, Alessandro Scarlatti, Nicola Porpora and Pistocchi.

Pistocchi: Tortorella imprigionate

The image of the imprisoned bird is often use as an allegory for the voice trapped in the castrato singer. Here the word-painting adds a special, flute-like quality to the music. A wide range for the full alto voice. Irene is causing trouble again!

The source is Santini HS 861 from the collection in the Diözesanbibliotek Münster, where it appears in a volume containing cantatas by Alessandro Scarlatti, Francesco Mancini, Carlo Cesarini, Giuseppe Tosi, Marc Antonio Ziani, Carlo Benati, Bernardo Sabadini, on anonymous composer in addition to 2 cantatas by Pistocchi, the current Tortorella imprigionata and Non più pene al cor mi sento for soprano and continuo.

Fille is at it again, withholding her love from an ardent suitor who is, rather pathetically, happy to endure the pain of her keeping her heart to herself. RARA format with some lovely word-painting.

The source is Münster Santini Sammlung HS 3977 which contains cantatas by Alessandro Scarlatti, Francesco Mancini, Giovanni Bononcini, Carlo Cesarini and Filippo Colinelli as well as this single piece by Gasparini.

Didone abbandonata da Enea (I-Nc) shows that Faggioli was a capable if not brilliant composer of serious music: the pathetic text is expressively set, with demands for greater vocal agility than in his comic work and with greater harmonic elaboration.
